Eczema treatment

When the skin loses its protective function

Dry, red, flaky skin that can itch, burn, or feel painful. Sometimes it's small patches, sometimes larger areas that keep returning. Eczema can manifest on the face, hands, arms, legs, or trunk and can have a major impact on how you feel in your own skin.

At NovaSkin, we understand how burdensome eczema can be. Not only physically, but also mentally. The constant unrest, the itching, and the search for what does and doesn't help can be very frustrating. At the same time, we believe it's important to be honest about what is and isn't possible.

Our vision on eczema

We don't see eczema as an isolated skin problem, but as a signal that the skin can no longer properly perform its protective function. The skin barrier is weakened and the microbiome is out of balance, making the skin more sensitive to external stimuli and more prone to inflammatory reactions.

In many cases, we can support the skin towards more rest and stability. At the same time, we recognize that eczema is a chronic condition for some people, for example due to hereditary predisposition, allergies, or persistent internal sensitivities. In those situations, the focus is not on curing, but on keeping symptoms manageable and improving quality of life.

Our approach is holistic, guiding, and always tailored to what your skin can handle.

What is eczema?

Eczema is an inflammatory reaction of the skin that can manifest as redness, flaking, dryness, itching, and sometimes cracks or weeping patches. There are different forms of eczema, such as atopic eczema, contact eczema, and allergy- or stress-related eczema.

What these forms have in common is that the skin barrier is not functioning optimally. The skin loses moisture faster and allows irritating substances, allergens, and bacteria to pass through more easily. This can lead to recurring or long-lasting symptoms.

How does eczema develop?

Eczema usually develops through an interplay of factors. Hereditary predisposition often plays an important role. Additionally, external influences such as weather conditions, skincare products, cleaning agents, and frequent washing can further exhaust the skin.

Internal factors can also contribute to the development and persistence of eczema. Think of allergies, increased histamine load, food intolerances, a disrupted gut barrier, and prolonged stress. When these factors remain present, eczema can become chronic.

This doesn't mean nothing is possible, but it does mean it's important to have realistic expectations.

How do you recognize eczema?

Eczema can manifest in different ways. Symptoms can have periods of improvement and worsening.

Persistent or recurring redness

Dry or flaky patches

Itching that can sometimes be intense

Burning feeling skin

Tight or painful skin when touched

Cracks or thickening of the skin

Symptoms are influenced by stress, fatigue, and temperature changes

Our approach to eczema

At NovaSkin, the focus with eczema is on supporting and protecting the skin, not on forcing recovery. We work with carefully selected external products that help strengthen the skin barrier and support the microbiome.

In many cases, the principle of less is more applies here too. Sometimes we advise simplifying routines or temporarily stopping products that continue to irritate the skin. Rest is often an essential first step.

Additionally, where appropriate, we look internally at factors such as allergies, histamine sensitivity, food intolerances, stress load, and gut barrier health. Not with the promise that everything is solvable, but to gain insight into what may be maintaining your skin condition.

When is collaboration with a doctor needed?

Eczema can range from mild to severe. In some cases, medical guidance is necessary, for example when eczema is severe, extensive, or insufficiently controllable. Also when allergies are suspected or when symptoms continue to worsen, collaboration with a GP or dermatologist is important.

We work supplementary and supportively and will always advise involving medical care when needed.

Living with eczema requires guidance

When eczema has a chronic character, this means the goal shifts from solving to keeping under control. This requires knowledge, guidance, and acceptance of the skin's limitations.

With the right support, the skin can often become calmer, symptoms can decrease, and many people learn to better cope with triggers and flare-ups.
